basic concept for my protagonist's journey to becoming a legend

Father works to feed mothers addiction, tears family apart.
Father works himself to death to make enough to survive. Mother overdoses over loss of father. Rage consumes him.
His power is discovered and he is adopted into magic guild. Recognized as special he is trained as elite.
His training complete, he is sent as an elite to cooperate in the war effort in defeating tragic bad guy.
Many trials lead them to construct a pendant to harness the magic needed to close bad guy's portal to dead.
Good guy sacrifices self to defeat bad guy and close portal to dead. Rest of living good guys return to tell his tale.
