"Sense-making talk" is an essential part of science activities. Teachers should encourage students to make connections and determine what patterns they see and notice. Teachers need to know if students are truly understanding the material and talk is an effective way to accomplish this Windschitl, M.; Thompson, J.; Braaten, M., 2018, p. 63). This is important because students may not have a complete understanding of science. The talk helps teachers identify gaps in learning and can inform instruction.
The purpose of activities is to develop scientific reasoning skills, have students do "authentic scientific work" and make connections between science and "social issues." It is smart to model parts of the activity and model the teacher's thinking process (Windschitl, M.; Thompson, J.; Braaten, M., 2018, p. 62). This is important because activities should be intentionally planned to maximize student learning and success. Students benefit from learning how to be scientists and test hypotheses.

Teachers should ask specific questions about the scientific activity. The questions should be probing and press for further, more detailed responses. Follow-up questions should be included as well Windschitl, M.; Thompson, J.; Braaten, M., 2018, p. 65). This is important because students are able to engage in more effective discussions when asked the right questions. This builds inquiry and reasoning skills.
Some great teaching strategies are choosing one or two main ideas for students to utilize during the activity, utilizing two or three different resources such as analogies and examples that relate to the ideas and using a check-in question Windschitl, M.; Thompson, J.; Braaten, M., 2018, p. 68). This is important because students need to understand how ideas relate to each other in order to make sense of them.
Questions: It is important to remember these key ideas because they can help me problem-solve how to plan effective science lessons. They will help me know how to reach students through various strategies. I think I would share the pressing questions idea with my mentor because it could help our students extend their learning.
