- The Persian Empire was founded in 550 BC. It started as a collection of semi-nomadic tribes, who raised animals on the Iranian Plateau. The first king of this empire was Cyrus the Great. Under his rule, the Persian Empire defeated Media, Lydia, and Babylon. Soon, all of the early world empires, like Mesopotamia, Egypt's Nile Valley, and India's Indus Valley united to make the Persian Empire.

- Cyrus the Great is forever remembered in the Cyrus Cylinder, a clay cylinder written in 539 BC with the story of how he conquered Babylon, bringing an end to the Neo-Babylonian empire.
- First, this is the Cyrus Cylinder, where the story of how our first leader, Cyrus the Great, conquered Babylon. It is made in cuneiform, or wedge shaped writing.

- In the Bible, Cyrus the Great was praised for freeing the Jewish and allowing them to rebuild their temple. He was a leader who ruled with an idea of tolerance, believing happy people would listen better. He let people keep their religion and was a kinder, more favored leader among the people.
- Second, this is our temple where we pray and worship our gods. Cyrus let us rebuild our temple and keep our religion. Nice, right?
- The third king, Darius I, ruled when the empire was at it's largest. The empire stretched from The Caucasus and West Asia to what was then Macedonia (today’s Balkans), the Black Sea, Central Asia and even into Africa including parts of Libya and Egypt.
- This is how big our empire is! Wow!
- Sadly, in the early days, slaves were a normal thing for rich land owners and government officials. In the caves, there were semi-rare ores and minerals, so this was a place where slaves would mine. Later in history, Darius would make standard currency, or minted coins from these minerals, so more would be mined for the government.
- This is not fair for our people, but we cannot challenge the laws of Darius I.
- The Persian Empire entered fall after a failed invasion by Xerxes I (the fourth king and son of Darius I) in 480 BC. The Persian Empire finally fell to the invading armies of Alexander the Great of Macedon in 330 B.C. Later rulers tried to restore the Persian Empire to its boundaries, though the empire never regained the size it had achieved under Cyrus the Great.
