- Excommunications: In 1054, tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church led to a dramatic split. Cardinal Humbert, representing the Pope, kicked out Patriarch Michael I Cerularius of the Eastern Church. In response, Michael I Cerularius expelled Humbert and his group. This back-and-forth of excommunications marked the official separation of the two branches.

- Theological Disputes:Filioque Controversy: The Western Church added “Filioque” (“and the Son”) to the Nicene Creed, which changed the belief about how the Holy Spirit comes from God. The Eastern Church disagreed with this change.Papal Authority: The Roman Catholic Church claimed the Pope had the highest authority over all Christians.
