Americans had divide views over the french revolution
They declared war on monarchies which included britian
A group called Jacobins seized power in France, killed king Louis xvi
The revolution took place in France and wanted united states alliance and expected them to help in the war.
Republicians like Thomas Jefferson and James Madison wanted to support the France.
Federalist like Alexander Hamilton wanted to go back to and support Britain.
President Washington took neither side and issued the declaration of neutrality.
The declaration said that the u.s. would support neither side.
The french sent a Edmond Genet dipomant to win the american support but didn't persent his credentials.
He violated the neutrally and protocol which outraged Washington and his political backers in France fallen then he stayed here in the u.s.
