- Cubans rebelled against Spanish rule by declaring a war for independence. This fight was led by Josè Martì using guerilla fighting tactics, while Spain fought back with deprivation of resources. America sympathized with the Cuban's fight for democracy and the harsh war methods fof Spain.
- We declare war against Spain!!!
- Newspapers continuously helped spread the word of the war and hatred for being ruled by the Spanish government. Cartoons such as the yellow press had a strong impact in spreading anti-Spain rule messages and increasing American jingoism, which is aggressive nationalism. These media poropoganda portrayed Cuban rebels as patriots from the American revolution and compared these two events.
- FIGHT!
- A ship called Maine exploded on a harbor and many died. Spain was accused for causing this and this fueled a lot of anger. It was later found that the Spanish didn't cause the but at the time of war, this was a prominent belief.
- The war began on April 11, 1898 and was officially declared 8 days later. The U.S. fought and formed an army which was dedicated to fighting for Cuba to protect them against these injustices. They made it clear that they did not want to annex Cuba through this.
- George Dewey led the Navy to the Pillippines and launched a surprise attack that was a success. Emilio Aguinaldo fought on land as a Cuban nationalist. Spanish surrendured and both attacks were declared a victory.
- FIGHT!
- Many died during the fighting due to poor training and supplies. Cavalry units such as the Rough Riders, led by Roosevelt, were among several cavalry units that become well known through these battles. The Spanish forces in Santiago surrendered as they lost many soldiers from combat and disease.
