Photosynthesis is how plants make their food. Plants need three things for this process: sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide (which is in the air). They take in water through their roots and carbon dioxide through tiny openings in their leaves. Inside the leaves, there are special parts called chloroplasts that use sunlight to turn the water and carbon dioxide into food. This food is a sugar called glucose, which the plant uses for energy to grow. As a result, oxygen is also produced and released into the air. This process is important because it helps plants grow and provides oxygen for us to breathe.
