The democratic model of ancient Greece's system of self-government influenced U.S. democracy
The idea of rule of law came from the philosopher Aristotle’s belief in natural law. He claimed the existence of a higher justice in nature—certain essential rights—that superseded the laws written by humans. The Constitution of the Athenians and the laws of many other Greek city-states influenced the U.S. Constitution.
The Reformation was also an important influence on modern U.S. government
Martin Luther wrote the 95 theses in 1517 which led to the growth of democracy as it marked the beginning of the Protestant Reformation. The Reformation challenged the authority of the Catholic Church and made it so that most of Europe didn't have just one religion. This inspired freedom of religion in the U.S.
The 95 Theses protests against clerical abuses, especially the sale of indulgences. Luther believed that Christians could only reach salvation through faith in god.
Next, the Enlightenment movement brought political modernization to the west, in terms of focusing on democratic values and institutions and the creation of modern, liberal democracies.
John Locke believed in a less controlling government. He believed every individual should be granted freedom of religion and speech. The first amendment of the United States Constitution does exactly that.
