- In the Battle of Vicksburg the Union gained control of the Mississippi River. General Grant attacked/sieges Vicksburg, The confederates resisted for 48 days. But the confederates ended up running out of supplies and surrendered. This union victory gave them control of the Mississippi River.

- The battle of Petersburg took out some of the confederate army but also gave the Union control of the Gulf of Mexico. It was a 10-month-long siege. Eventually, during the 10-month-long siege general, Lee issued an evacuation of Petersburg. They had run out of all supplies. This was a Union victory.
