WW1 was caused because of 4 M.A.I.N. causes. One of these causes was Militarism, which is an increase in military arms, recruitment, and spending. Then, the nations have a system of alliances formed for support during the war.

Another cause is imperialism, which is the competition for resources in other lands such as Africa and Asia.

The biggest event that led to WW1 was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand. He was assassinated by Serbian nationalists who was upset at Austria-Hungary's annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina.
There were two major alliances formed; the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente. The Triple Alliance contained Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy. The Triple Entente contained Russia, France, and Great Britain.
On April 2, 1917, the United States joined WW1 when they declared war on Germany. They did this because of the Zimmerman Telegram and because of German U-Boats sinking civilian ships containing US citizens.
