  • Government of Rome during Caesar's Time
  • Before the rule of Caesar, Rome's government consisted of being run by two Consuls, elected by the people, and was known as a Republic.
  • Structure of the Roman Government
  • During Caesar's rule, however, the government was run by one person, known as an Emperor. The emperor either became a dictator, or listened to the advice of the Senate.
  • The struggle between two classes, Plebeians and Patricians, formed the principals of the structure of their government.
  • They had a system of checks and balances, limited time in office, and was primarily made up of the ideas of a democracy, oligarchy, and a republic.
  • The two Consuls had the main power in government, being able to call meeting for the Senate, introduce new laws, call elections, and can not be removed from office.
  • Patricians and plebeians were able to vote for the consuls, but women and slaves were not allowed to vote. Even when there was an emperor, the senate controlled most of the governing body. The Roman Officials always look into the foreign nations’ business to see if they could get new ideas. Only the consuls may introduce new roman laws. Government offcials were often corrupt.
