- The story unfolds from Beth Teller’s perspective, narrated in third-person past tense.It is revealed that prior to the events of the story, a tragic incident occurred while Beth’s Aunt Viv was behind the wheel, which tragically led to Beth’s untimely death.
- Although Beth Teller passed away, she returned as a ghost visible only to her grieving father Michael Teller, a police detective in Australia. Overwhelmed by grief and slipping into depression,Michael is unable to accept that her passing was unintentional.
- Michael Teller is sent to investigate a burned-down children's home, Beth and Michael visit the home where Beth sees a crow. Michael shows Beth photos of the home, whichinclude unhappy-looking children.
- Beth Teller suggests they track down the girl who was found near the home the night of the fire. At the hospital, a sharp-featured Aboriginal girl, Isobel Catching, flags Michael down, identifies herself as the witness, and brings him to her hospital room, where she begins telling a story.
- In Isobel Catching’s story, a girl with long gray hair, gray eyes, and gray skin emerges from the shadows of the room where the Fetchers deposited Isobel and introduces herself as Crow. Crow explains that the Fetchers work for the Feed, a monster that will eat Isobel’s colors. Isobel realises that Crow is gray because the Feed fed on her. Crow informs Catching that the Feed has killed many victims. She advises Catching to become dead to avoid the pain.
- After finishing her story, Michael goes back to the burned down childrens home and finds the hatch to a bunker. Michael realizes that the “tunnels” in Catching’s story were the bunker, the "birds" were the children in the home, and Alexander Sholt was a "Feed". Beth realizes Derek must have been the other Feed. Michael tells Allie that he thinks Alexander and Derek have been kidnapping, abusing, and murdering girls since high school.
