- Magellan has asked the Portuguese King Manuel I for funding of his exploration trip to circumnavigate the world and claim any newly discovered lands for Portugal. However, the king denies his request to explore.

- Having his proposition denied by Portugal he goes to the kingdom of Spain and the young King Charles I was ready to make his mark on history and accepted Magellan's proposition.

- Although the kingdom of Spain had agreed to Magellan's terms for his voyage, they were skeptical of Magellan's loyalty to the kingdom of Spain due to his Portuguese origins.
