Текст на Статията

  • Oedipus, do not go!
  • (Shut up, Jocasta) Someone fetch me the shepherd!
  • Where can I find the man who found me?
  • Also, Polybus is not your real father.
  • Do you know this person, shepherd?
  • WHY??
  • LIAR!!
  • Even though I knew the prophecy, I was not just going to let a baby die!
  •
  • OK fine... And yes, I did find & deliver you to King Polybus..
  • No..
  • Yes, I was a shepherd for King Laius.
  •
  • Oedipus is still worried that he could still mate with his mother, when the messenger reveals that he is "no more a father to Oedipus than King Polybus". And that Oedipus was discovered by a shepherd as a baby with his ankles riveted together. Oedipus requests to see the shepherd, Jocasta pleads with him not to, Oedipus ignores her and she runs off.
  • My King!
  • Raise my daughters.. I am too weak..
  • The shepherd arrives and introduces himself, and then tries to avoid the messenger and confrontation. He then admits to knowing the messenger, and that he did find Oedipus as a baby with his feet riveted together, and delivered that baby to king Polybus. He then admitted to knowing of the curse, but would not let the baby die.
  • Jocasta has hung herself, and Oedipus, upon observing the scene, grabs pins from her dress, and gauges his eyes out with them. He stabs his eyes repeatedly, and his strength is gone.
  • Everyone is shocked by the events, Oedipus is now weak and blinded, revealing that he gauged out his eyes because "all that is sweet has parted from my vision", and it was Apollo's that made him do it. The elders suggest it is better to die than live blind and ruined, to which he resists that notion. Creon enters and Oedipus tells him to take care of his younger daughters, as he is too weak to do that.
