- Considering Vicky's family history, she always thought her greatest health risk was a stroke.
- We thought only one of your breasts was cancerous, but we have found cancer in both.

- Then, Vicky was diagnosed with breast cancer.
- To get specific, Vicky was diagnosed with triple positive breast cancer.
- This is estrogen-receptor-positive, progesterone-receptor positive- and HER2 positive.
- Triple positive breast cancer makes up 10% of all breast cancer diagnoses.

- Due to her family history, Vicky was extremely shocked to receive this diagnosis.
- Additionally, Vicky was found to have bilateral breast cancer.
- This means that cancer was found in both of her breasts.
- Bilateral breast cancer is uncommon. It makes up 1.4-12% of breast cancers .

- What was even more shocking was the fact that both of Vicky's breasts were found to be cancerous.

- Vicky, you should try moving around during your chemotherapy treatment. You'll feel better if you do!

- Following the diagnosis, Vicky began to undergo chemotherapy treatment. She received regular infusions of Herceptin and Arimidex.

- At first, Vicky wanted to remain in her bed during chemotherapy treatments and watch TV.
- Wow! I really do feel better if I move around during my treatment. It makes me feel like I have more control of my cancer.

- Then, a friend of Vicky encouraged her to be active during her treatment.
- I don't like the way I look now that I had a mastectomy.

- Although Vicky didn't like this suggestion at first...
- I love my breast reconstruction. I am feeling better than ever!

- Vicky learned that her friend was correct!

- Eventually, Vicky's cancer had progressed and she had to get a double mastectomy, which took a toll on her self confidence.

- However, Vicky got a breast reconstruction with silicone implants, which lifted her confidence right back up!
- I love my support group! They make me feel so seen and also teach me so much. I am an informed patient because of them.

- Now, Vicky is cancer free! Her biggest goal is to remain cancer free, so she has a holistic team that helps her stay on top of her health.

- This team includes Vicky's primary care physician, surgeon, plastic surgeon, oncologist, nutritionist, and Christian counselor, among others.
- I am worried my cancer will come back and my loved ones will be put through the ringer again.

- Vicky is also apart of an online support group for those affected by breast cancer.
- I will not let those feelings of worry overtake me! Instead, I'll channel them into gardening.

- Additionally, Vicky receives a lot of support from her husband, Richard. He has never skipped one of her appointments and has dedicated his life to helping her.
- Vicky has access to 3 strong support systems.
- These support systems provide Vicky with social support.
- Social support includes emotional support (ex. comfort), informational support (ex. advice), esteem support, and tangible support (ex. going to appointments with patient).

- Of course, there are still days where Vicky is filled with doubt and worry over a cancer reoccurrence.
- Social support has been found to be beneficial to health promotion.
- Social support strengthens one's quality of life, health, and coping abilities when they are facing of stress and adversity.
- The fact that Vicky receives large amounts of social support has translated in her ability to generally remain positive throughout her breast cancer journey.

- However, because of the social support she receives, Vicky is able to remain positive and channel those feelings into new hobbies, such as gardening!
