  • Between 1740 and 1750, Ngati Whatua O Kaipara moved south, invading the isthmus and killing Kiwi Tamaki, paramount chief of Wai-O-Hua. Then they took his last pa at mangere, securing their dominance via intermarrying the descendants of the Wai-O-Hua.
  • At the peak of prosperity in 1750, the population measured tens of thousands. It was pre-Europeans New Zealand's most wealthy and populous area.
  • In 1821, the Ngapuhi leader Hongi Hika led a series of attacks on the thriving region. He stormed two of Ngati Paoa's fortified settlements, killing hundreds andenslaving hundreds more with his 2000 men armed with1000 muskets. Hika repeated the slaughter at Te Totara,the Ngati Mary fortress near Thames.
  • In 1825, the Ngapuhi iwi struck again. The target this time were the NgatiWhatua, with the battle being fought at Kaiwaka. Despite the Ngati Whatuaiwi having 1000 men, they were no match for the blood-thirsty Ngapuhi.After being crushed by the Ngapuhi, the Ngati Whatua iwi abandoned the isthmus and decided to live in exile, under Apiwai Te Kawau's (their leader) orders.
