  • Stage 1: Nebula & Protostar
  • Fun fact about nebulae. We're highly allergic to dust.
  • Nebula
  • Stage 2: Main Sequence
  • Wohoo! I'm an adult now!
  • Stage 3: Red Supergiant
  • What's happening? Why am I expanding?!
  • A nebula, which is a large cloud of stellar dust and gas, is the starting point for stars. In this stage, gravity slowly pulls together parts of the dispersed matter to create very young protostars.
  • Stage 4: Gravity Compresses
  • As the protostar's energy increases and it gains more heat, it will turn into a main sequence star, which is the stage in which stars spend most of their lives. The star above is a very, very large star. It has so much energy and is so hot that its color is blue.
  • Stage 5: Supernova
  • Near the end of the star's life, it starts to cool down. Hydrogen runs out of the star's core, so it starts to burn helium. The energy created causes the outer layers of the star to expand, but extremely huge red supergiants and red hypergiants like the one above have enough gravitational pull to bring the outside gasses towards the core.
  • Stage 6: Black Hole
  • Ahhhhh!
  • As the star keeps using up its energy, the energy in the core slowly runs out, and the strong force of gravity will start to overpower the outward force of the nuclear fusion. Gravity starts to compress the star into a ball smaller than a planet, and the energy and density of the star get EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY, EXTREMELY high!
  • Gravity, stop killing me!
  • He he he he he.....
  • Gravity condenses the star so much that the star cannot handle it anymore. BOOM! The almost infinitely dense ball explodes in what is called a supernova.
  • Oh no...
  • The supernova creates so much energy that a hole is "ripped" in space. That area is so dense that it sucks EVERYTHING in its path. Not even light can escape it, so it is invisible. A black hole has formed in space.
  • What? Why are you scared of me? I'm just a tiny little harmless hole in space.....
