An Elephant in the Garden

- Lizzie, who is a World War 2 survivor, lives in a nursing home. She makes friends with her nurse’s son because he reminds her of her little brother. She tells him and his mother her story about her family’s elephant in the garden.
- Lizzie lived in Dresden, Germany at the beginning of WWII. Her father went away to fight for Germany in the war, leaving her, her brother Karli, and her mother Mutti. Since they needed money, Mutti became a zookeeper and grew attached to a baby elephant who had lost her mother. She named the elephant Marlene after her favorite singer. Mutti brought Marlene home, and it stayed in the garden. One night when they took Marlene for a walk, Allied bombers came and bombed Dresden. Mutti, Marlene, Lizzie, and Karli run to their Aunt and Uncle’s house in search for hospitality.
- Mutti, Lizzie, Karli, and Marlene make it to their Aunt and Uncle’s house, only to find it empty. They go to put Marlene in the barn, and find an Allied solider there. Mutti wakes him up and threatens him with a pitchfork. Karli gets excited and talks to him and learns that he is from Canada, his name is Peter, and he speaks almost perfect German. Mutti agrees to let him stay, but she will turn him in later.
- Lizzie and Karli grow comfortable with Peter, but Mutti still doesn’t trust him. But when Karli falls through ice, Peter saves him, Mutti fully trusts Peter. Lizzie admires Peter.
- After they get Karli inside, they all sit down to eat. German soldiers come to the door looking for an escaped Allied Solider. Mutti lies to them and says that she doesn’t know where he is and tells them that Peter is her son that cant join the army because of health problems. The soldiers buy the excuse and leave. Peter suggests that they find the Americans so they will be safe. The next morning they pack and leave.
- While traveling, Karli becomes sick. The group stops by the nearest town and asks for help. They come across a mansion and are greeted by a grumpy old man. The mistress of the house lets them in along with dozens of other refugees. The woman gives them space in her attic and calls a doctor in the morning.
