As he spoke to her, Tim the ostler had overheard, and was making plans to get rid of this dumb highwayman.

The highwayman did not arrive, but the redcoats did. They strung up Bess to her bed. She heard the Highwayman coming. She knew if she didn't do something they'd kill the highwayman, so...
