  • Are we . . . in a brain?
  • Indeed! We're actually in Brian's. Your favorite troublemaker from American Lit.
  • What are we doing here?
  • It's obvious you love and know the content you teach. But what about the way Brian's brain works? As high school teachers, it's important to understand how teenagers learn and remember that they all learn differently. That way we can teach what we love in a way that makes sense to 15-year-olds like Brian.

  • Now we're in Brian's room. He was actually moved by the friendship between George and Lenny in Of Mice and Men but had a hard time expressing that in an essay or out loud in front of all of his classmates.
  • Well, I wish he had talked to me! What's this we're looking at on his computer?
  • Brian actually went on StoryboardThat and created comics based on the book.
  • Brian Pinsky did that?! Hey, I think I'm starting to understand now. I can't just rely on my content knowledge. I need to also tap into pedagogical and technological knowledge.

  • Exactly! We can use our technological knowledge to both deliver and teach the content we know and love so much to reach students like Brian. This is called the TPACK framework.
  • Ah, interesting. I'm really impressed with the way Pinsky used technology on his own to engage with the book. I thought he hated reading! I've learned an important lesson: My enthusiasm for and knowledge about literature is necessary but not sufficient. I need to better understand and accommodate how students learn and expand my knowledge of how technology can support the content I teach and the way I teach it.
