Born free in the early 19th century, David Walker lived in a nation that claimed liberty while enslaving millions. Witnessing this contradiction, he refused to accept a freedom that existed only for some and felt a deep responsibility to confront the injustice faced by his people.

Believing that silence was as dangerous as oppression itself, Walker used his words as a weapon. Through Appeal to the Colored Citizens of the World, he condemned slavery, racism, and hypocrisy, knowing that spreading these ideas could cost him his life.

Although David Walker died young under mysterious circumstances, his message could not be silenced. His writings continued to circulate, empowering Black Americans, alarming slaveholders, and helping fuel the growing abolitionist movement that challenged slavery across the nation.
