When the Chernobyl accident happened on April 26, 1986, I was in the vicinity of the plant. It was a quiet night until suddenly at 1:23 am, I heard an explosion. It was a loud explosion, the air seemed to change in that instant. As I looked up at reactor 4, I saw a blue light rise into the sky, and I couldn't move.

They began to evacuate Pripyat, I knew that many people died but they still did everything possible to evacuate people, and I saw how families got on buses, leaving behind everything they knew. I was overwhelmed with uncertainty, not knowing if this was temporary or if the region had been doomed forever.
