- Jude's home in Syria is by the sea. The ocean symbolizes beauty and tranquility and the comfort of home. Jude describes the sights and smells and appeal of her hometown, which is also a popular tourist destination and a place where Syrians and people from all over the world come to relax and enjoy the scenery.
- Jude is forced to leave her beloved home in Syria due to the civil war. She knows that she is lucky to be able to go to live with her Uncle Mazin. Her Aunt Michelle is kind and welcoming and soon she begins to see the house in Clifton as home too. This is comforting and conflicting.
