- Lizabeth and her brother go to Miss Lottie's garden. They have always thought annoying her was fun and interesting. So, they decided to destroy Miss Lotties' marigolds.
- When Lizabeth arrives home, she discovers her parents talking about something serious. Her dad is talking about how little of money he makes. Lizabeth felt very fearful and bewildered.
- Lizabeth ran to Miss. Lotties home and then sat in the ruined garden crying. She looked at Miss. Lottie and instead of seeing a witch looking human she saw an old woman who was ugly but tried to create beauty. In that moment she felt ashamed, but she also felt compassion.
