- Captain Wentworth overhears Mr. Harville and Anne discussing the faithfulness of men and women in love. Wentworth is moved by what Anne says about women not giving up their feelings for the ones they love, even when all hope is lost.
- After overhearing Anne's conversation with Mr. Harville, he writes Anne a letter confessing his feelings for her. He then delivers the letter to Anne when she isn't around and leaves.
- After reading the letter, Anne finds Captain Wentworth and tells him that she also loves him and has regretted the day she broke off the engagement. They both declare their love for each other and decide to renew their engagement.
