Tintin the explorer and mystery breaker was in Calcutta were he came to meet his old friends. He was also hoping to find a mystery which he could solve. As he was out on a stroll he came by a river which looked unusual than of all the beautiful rivers he saw. This river on enquiring was River Hooghly and one of the ugliest rivers in Kolkata. No one knew why. Ah! This is a mystery to solve.

He went to a friend who was a scientist named Dr. Clyde and he also took a sample of water from the river to test it. Upon testing the water it was a mixture of soap water, trash and dirty water. It struck Tintin that while he was there he saw a woman washing her clothes in the river. He even remembered seeing a lady throw a used bottle in a pile of trash just at the shore. He doubted that drainage water was drained here. He noted everything in his notebook and said he would return.

He returned back to the hotel and went to his desk. He searched in many books on how this could affect the river and how it would affect the people living there. Finally preparing a report he decided to meet the government officials the next day.
