Storyboard Text

  • My name is Betty Friedan I was born on February 4, 1921, Peoria, Illinois.
  • I excelled at Smith College, graduating in 1942 with a bachelor’s degree. Although I received a fellowship to study at the University of California, I chose instead to go to New York to work as a reporter.
  • I got married in 1947 and had three children. My first child Daniel my second Emily and my third is Jonathan.
  • I started to become restless being a homemaker and wondered if other women felt the same way. I began to survey other gradates at Smith college, the results made me form my book called The Feminine Mystique.
  • I co-founded the National Organization for Women (NOW) in 1966, serving as its first president. I also fought for abortion rights by establishing the National Association for the Repeal of Abortion Laws (now known as NARAL Pro-Choice America) in 1969. I also estblished other books about women's right movements.
  • I encouraged women to seek new opportunities for themselves. As an icon in the women's rights movement, I did more than write about confining gender stereotypes, I became a force for change. I encouraged women to get out their homes as a housewife and go to school and to find a job to work.
