- Offred is the protagonist in 'The Handmaids Tale'. In the novel we never get to learn Offred's real name. In time before Offred lived with her husband Luke and their daughter. However, when Gilead takes over her family is split up because Luke and her marriage is not deemed valid. Offred is taken to a place called the red centre where she is taught about the new rules of Gilead and how to be a handmaid. Offred's job as a handmaid is to produce children for the Commander. Offred is currently sitting in the room in the house of her current placement.

- The Commander's wife, also known as Serena Joy, is the woman represented in blue. Blue is the colour that the Commander's wives wear. In the time before Serena Joy was the lead soprano from a religious program. After her singing career ended, Serena Joy became a public figure and advocated for traditional values in households, as well as women staying at home instead of working. In Gilead, Serena Joy likes gardening and knitting, she also likes smoking despite it being banned.

- Nick is the Commander's Guardian and driver, the novel describes him spending most of his time cleaning the Commander's car. In the novel we never learn anything about Nick's backstory. When the Commander wanted to meet up with Offred privately, Nick would wear his hat a certain way to indicate to Offred whether or not the Commander wanted to see her. Towards the end of the novel Nick and Offred have a secret relationship and he helps her escape. Offred believes Nick may be an Eye, which is why he can help her escape.
