- "Who's there? What, ho!"
- "That which hath made them drunk hath made me bold."
- "And ;tis not done. Th' attempt and not the deed"
- "Alack, I am afraid they have awaked"
- "I have done the deed."
- "This is a sorry sight"
- "Why did you bring these daggers from the place?They must lie there: go carry them; and smearThe sleepy grooms with blood."
- "A foolish thought, to say a sorry sight.
- Lady Macbeth has just drugged king Duncans servants. While she is talking about what she has done, she hears a voice from out side and fears she has been caught.
- "I'll go no more:I am afraid to think what I have done;Look on't again I dare not.
- Give me the daggers: the sleeping and the deadAre but as pictures: 'tis the eye of childhoodThat fears a painted devil. If he do bleed,I'll gild the faces of the grooms withal;For it must seem their guilt.
- Lady Macbeth fears that Macbeth has failed his deed and that their plan has been discovered.
- "Will all great Neptune's ocean wash this bloodClean from my hand? No, this my hand will ratherThe multitudinous seas in incarnadine,Making the green one red."
- (Enter Macbeth, with bloody daggers) Lady Macbeth is angry because Macbeth didn't leave the dagger with the servants.
- Knocking within
- "I hear a knockingAt the south entry: retire we to our chamber;A little water clears us of this deed:How easy is it, then! Your constancyHath left you unattended.
- Macbeth isn't able to continue with the plan and face what he has done. Lady Macbeth gets angry and decides to go plant the dagger by herself.
- Lady Macbeth leaves to go plant the dagger, while Macbeth struggles to come to terms with what he has done and is full of guilt and fear.
- Lady Macbeth returns as there is a knocking on the door. She orders Macbeth to go get dressed quickly so they can pretend they have been sleeping.(End of scene 2)
