  • The New England Region is the northernmost region and included Massachusetts Bay, Rhode Island, Connecticut, and New Hampshire.
  • The climate in New England is hot in the summer and cold in the winter. New England has rocky soil, thick forests, many rivers and easy access to the sea.
  • The Pilgrims in 1620 and Puritans in 1630 wanted to escape religious persecution in England. The Puritans were very strict in their beliefs and not accepting of other religions. Roger Williams was banished from Massachusetts and founded Rhode Island for more religious freedom.
  • There was small farming of crops like corn, beans, squash, onions, apples and also livestock. By the rivers there was fishing, trapping and trading. By the ocean there was cod-fishing and whaling and lumbering for wood for building ships and homes.
  • Men who owned land were allowed to vote for representatives, local officials and governors. Town meetings were held for colonists to vote on local problems to settle.
