the reason the seasons are different in the northern and southern hemisphere is because the earth is on a tilt.
the sun is able to make the earth hotter if it is closer to a 90-degree angle.
The sun is also up for a longer amount of time during the summer. this allows earth to heat up during the day.

There are 2 equinoxes during a year. they happen during September 22 and March 21. an equinox happens when the sun travels directly over the equator line.
the tropic of Capricorn and cancer are Tropics near the equator. they only really have 2 seasons. this is because when it is summer the sun is almost always directly overhead. similarly the poles sometimes don't get any sunlight at all. this is because during the winter when the tilt is facing away it doesn't rotate enough to face the sun.
summer in the northern hemisphere means Winter in the southern hemisphere. this is because as the earth revolves around the sun its tilt doesn't change so exactly 6 months later it will be Winter in the northern hemisphere and summer in the southern hemisphere.
