In Fences, Troy is talking to Rose and Bono about his drinking, “…I’m gonna drink just enough to where I can handle it. Then I cuts it loose. I leave it alone. Troy telling his story about his past and how he left his home and was trying to find his way around,“I walked on down to Mobile and hitched up with some if them fellows that was heading this way, Got up here and found out… not only couldn't you get a job…you couldn't find no place to live, I thought I was in freedom, shhh, Colored folks living down there on the riverbanks in whatever kind of shelter they could find for themselves,” (Wilson 53). Troy leaves his home hoping for a better life and more freedom. But when he gets there, he has some struggle trying to fit in and find work.

In Fences, Rose's past explains why she stay loyal to Troy. "..she is ten years younger than TROY, her devotion to him stems from her a succession of abusive men and their babies, a life of partying and running the streets" (Wilson 11). Rose had a difficult past, so she values the strength Troy gives her. She stays committed to him even when things are hard.
