SAMR at Lunch Duty

Storyboard Text

  • I’ve been trying to evaluate one of my lessons using the SAMR method.
  • UGH!SAMR?! TPACK?!I don’t even know the difference!
  • Most people think of TPACK as the one with the circles. It’s about areas of knowledge that teachers have; Technical, Pedagogical, and Content. Where those circles overlap, is your TPACK. I think of it as a way to evaluate yourself as a teacher.
  • Ok, that makes sense, but what about SAMR?
  • SAMR stands for Substitution, Augmentation, Modification, and Redefinition. Some people think of it as levels like a ladder you’re supposed to climb. I think of it as a way to evaluate a lesson, instead of a teacher.
  • Ladder? Wait, I thought SAMR was a pool…or was it coffee cups??? Now I’m confused and thirsty!
  • You’re right, SAMR does have a lot of graphics attached to it, but here are a couple of things that might help;At the Substitution level, there’s really no point; it’s tech for tech’s sake. The Redefinition level refers to a lesson that would not have been possible without tech. Those are the two extremes, but remember, nobody should expect to be a Redefining Rockstar with every lesson!
  • Oh, just like nobody can spend all their pool time in the deep end, or drink only pumpkin spice lattes, or balance on top of a ladder?
  • Exactly, just try to spend some time in each area of the SAMR spectrum.
