  • Louverture's new constitution will be great for us! We will now be able to own land!
  • Yes! And maybe even gain our land back as a country! Looks like things are turning around.
  • 2
  • Why are only white people able to own land? Does this law even apply to us?

  • WHERE ARE OUR RIGHTS??
  • LOUVERTURE'S CONSITITION DOES NOT BENEFIT US
  • WE DESERVE OUR LAND BACK!!
  • In July 1801, Louverture released a new constitution, consisting of economic policies that claimed to be beneficial to all people, including enslaved people, by ensuring their right to own land.
  • No rights will apply to us. The colonists always get their way
  • Why bother trying to earn our designated rights? They are unjust and only benefit white people
  • We don't deserve to continuously pay the price for slavery
  • 4
  • However, enslaved people soon came to the realization that the new laws relating to ownership of land, only applied to white people. Not only were black people lied to and stripped of their rights once again, but they were also being forced to work for these rights.
  • 5
  • AHHHHH!!!
  • You and your corrupt government exploited us and our people!
  • You all must pay for the pain and suffering that you have caused us!!
  • People of Saint-Domingue began to strongly oppose Louverture and his policies. This was a big deal considering that Louverture was a former slave himself, and was being turned against by his own Haitian people.
  • 6
  • JUST LET US BE FREE OF YOUR NEGLIGENCE!
  • Because of the inequity, Haitians began to ignore the new laws, because they didn’t benefit or apply to them regardless of what they may do.
  • In the north, formerly enslaved people revolted against the government, and charged Louverture with the exploitation of formerly enslaved people, which was merely for the French’s benefit. This rebellion resulted in the vast removal of white French colonists, due to the fear of slavery being re-established.
  • Ultimately, 300 white colonists were killed before Louverture’s military arrived and stopped the rebellion. In the end, black people both in the north, and in Saint-Domingue, remained unhappy and nevertheless, not free.
