Martin Luther was born on 10 of November 1483 in Germany. He joined the Augustinian order . He was afraid of dieing and not going to heaven so he studied the bible. He read thought that you can go to heaven by faith alone. He thought the sale of indulgences was wrong.
Martin Luther wrote the 95 theses in Latin. He wanted to discuss his views with others. He wrote to Archbishop of Mainz complaining about the sale of indulgences
The pope ordered Luther to meet Cardinal Cajetan but they could not change his mind. Luther had a public debate with John Eck. The pope sent a papal bull excommunicating Luther. Luther burned the papal in public.
The pope asked Charles V to intervene because Luther was becoming more popular. Charles V called Luther to the Diet of Worms. Luther spoke before the Diet and refused to withdraw his teachings.
After Luther the Diet, the emperor issued the Edict of Worms. On Luther's way home, he was 'captured' by soldiers of Frederick the wise. The soldiers took him to Wartburg Castle so that he would be safe. During the year, he translated the New Testament into German. Later he translated the Old Testament into German.
A civil and religious war broke out in Germany and lasted nine years. Even though the Catholic princes won some battles, Lutheranism was to strong to be defeated. The Peace of Augsburg brought the war to an end. This treaty stated that each ruler was free to decide the religion of his or her state. Catholics living in Lutheran states had to leave, as did Lutherans living in Catholic states.
