- Hamlet learns the truth about his father's death from the ghost. It is revealed that Claudius murdered the king and Hamlet shall take blood revenge.
- Revenge his foul and most unnatural murder.
- The serpent that did sting thy father's life now wears his crown.
- I perchance hereafter shall think meet to put an antic disposition on.

- Claudius, the new King, is Hamlet's uncle. Hamlet is still grieving over his father's death and privately expresses his disgust towards his mother, Gertrude.
- Good Hamelt, cast they nighted color off, and let thine eye look like a friend on Denmark, Do not forever with thy vailed lids seek for they noble father in the dust.

- Before leaving, Laertus gives advice to his sister, Ophelia, about Hamlet's intentions. Polonius bids Laertus a final goodbye, giving him some advice for the future. Ophelia receives a demand from Polonius that she shall never be seen with Hamlet ever again.
- Pooh. You speak like a green girl. This is for all: I would not, in plain terms, from this time forth, have you so slander any moment leisure, as to give words or talk with the Lord Hamlet.
