Billy buys his dogs
The dogs win the competition
The dosg are natural hunters and become well known in the area. Billy enters the dogs in a racoon hunting contest and they win money as a price. 
Battle with the cougar
Billy wanted hunting dogs, but his family told him they couldn't afford them. As time went by, Billy worked hard and got the money to buy the dogs from him. His names are Old Dan and Little Ann.
Old Dan and little Ann pass away
Billy's dogs are born hunters and knew the area where the competition was. Billy entered his dogs in the competition and at the end of the entire competition his dogs were the winners of the big tournament.
The red sacred fern grows
After the competition they encountered a cougar. The dogs protected Billy from the wild animal, but after the fight, the dog named Old Dan was seriously injured from the battle.
Old Dan passed away from his injuries in the cougar fight. Billy is devastated by the loss of his friend and also his dog Little Ann who doesn't want to eat anymore and doesn't feel like anything.
With the money they earned from the competition, the family will be moving soon. Before moving in, Billy visited the grave of his friends Old Dan and Little Ann. Looking at the grave of his dogs, the sacred red fern has grown between them.
