Engel V. Vitale Supreme Court Case

Storyboard Text

  • "Moral and Spiritual Training" in schools.
  • This isn't right, I won't have my child doing this!
  • This goes against my religious beliefs and practice!
  • Our students will have the option in the mornings to recite prayer.
  • Doing the prayer in schools violates the First Amendment's Establishment Clause!
  • "There was a sufficient separation of church and state so that the First Amendment was not infringed."
  • Our prayer is protected by the Free Exercise Clause of the First Amendment because the prayer does not encourage a specific religion, and is voluntary,
  • The prayer was a voluntary act and the students had the choice to not say it.
  • I may agree with this opinion, but I will still follow with the majority vote.
  • We are not participating in this case.
  • I am joined with Chief Justice Warren and Justices Douglas, Clark, Harlan, and Brennan and we conclude that the religious activity was composed of “government officials” (the school administrators) and used as a part of a government program (school instruction) to advance religious beliefs.
  • In saying this, any type of public promotion of religion, including giving financial aid to religious schools, violates the Establishment Clause.
  • It was a 6-1 ruling in favor for the arguing parents!
  • As the Supreme Court we rule that the prayer is Unconstitutional due to infringement on the First Amendment's Establishment Clause!
  • The government has no business drafting formal prayers for any segment of its population to repeat in a government-sponsored religious programs.
  • The Court has decided that the "Moral and Spiritual Training" in our New York Schools is to be disbanded.
