In The Handmaid's Tale, the protagonist is the character of Offred. Offred, meaning Of Fred, the name of the commander, she is under control. Due to an infertility crisis that was sweeping the world, Offred was forced into becoming a Handmaid due to the rule of Gilead. She initially attempted to flee when it became apparent that Gilead was taking over, however, the eyes managed to capture her attempting to escape, and thus she was thrown into being a handmaid. She lost all connection to her friends and family, and under the new rule, is forced to carry the children of the commander she has been assigned to. She later attempts to escape after the book; however was captured before going freedom. She is left unnamed to show that this could happen to anyone.

In the novel, Commander Fred Waterford is assigned the Handmaid Offred to carry his children as a result of the infertility crisis and his wife's infertility. Commander Waterford is a government official who has immense popularity in Gilead, and as a result, he lives in a large house that is guarded by many guardians and even an eye that is tasked with making sure the procedures of Gilead are followed. This also means that he has many staff, including a chauffeur, a kitchen staff, guardians, and a handmaid (Offred).

In the novel, in front of Commander Waterford's residence, there are guardians who are in charge of making sure that the residence is safe for the commander. They are armed with guns to make sure that any rebellious group that may have weaponry can be defended against. They typically stand at the front entrance or gate of the residence and guard the perimeter around the house.
