  • "Romeo, the love I bear thee can afford, no better term than this; thou art a villain." 3.1.61-62
  • "Tybalt, the reason that I have to love thee, doth much excuse the appertaining rage" 3.1.63-64
  • Romeo, Benvolio, Mercutio, Tybalt, and others are exchanging words and then fight
  • "Draw Benvolio, beat down their weapons." 3.1.87
  • Benvolio is explaining to the Prince that Romeo killed Tybalt, despite his initial efforts to suppress the fight
  • "Benvolio, who began this bloody fray?" 3.1.159
  • "Tybalt, here slain, whom Romeo's hand did slay - Romeo, that spoke him fair..." 3.1.160-161
  • This scene epitimizes the main conflict within the story; love vs. hate.  Romeo is explaining how he needs to love Tybalt, as they're now family through Juliet.  However, Tybalt is opposing this, by calling Romeo a villain.  Through the contradictory nature of the scene, it shows the main opposing forces.
  • This depiction of part of Act 3 scene 1 shows the love that Romeo displays to Tybalt, depsite his rejection of it.  The love that Romeo tries to show to Tybalt and his rejection of it shows the opposing forces; love vs. hate.
  • This relates to the motif of opposing forces because during the explanation, Benvolio describes the love Romeo was trying to show Tybalt love.  Then, hate is depicted as he kills Tybalt.   His explanation shows the contradictory nature of the scene, the initial love of Romeo, then his hatred through killing.
