Storyboard Text

  • Language is a foundation of human life. In fact, many of argued that language is what separates humans from all other species of animals across the globe.
  • But, how exactly is langue learned? I will be your narrator as we explore the world of language and language acquisition. Come with me!
  • In his paper, titled Cognitive Basis of Language Learning in Infants Jon Mcanmara argues that language learning occurs before even the first utterance of language occurs.
  • Who's my little boy?
  • BA! BAAAAA!
  • He also argues that although said infants don't actually understand language as a concept yet, they can understand tone and that something is trying to be communicated to them. This is the first step of language learning
  • In his book about child language development, researcher William O'Grady argues that children learn a lot of language through small talk.
  • Dada why do you have spikes on your head?
  • O'Grady also argues that although small talk greatly increases the vocabulary of young children, most children still don't fully understand how and when to use language.
  • Hahaha, that's just my hair sweetheart.
  • O'Grady says that a key factor of language learning is the growth of vocabulary. By the age pf 15 months a child may know 50 total words but they should be learning 10 new words per day.
  • Mama what's that?
  • By the age of 6, a child will have 14,000 known words and they should be learning up to 20 new words per day.
  • It's called a sprinkler, it helps the grass grow!
  • She argues that storytelling, whether from a book or otherwise is one of the best ways to foster understanding of language to real concepts. It should be a focus for parents and caregivers at the beginning stages of language development.
  • In her writing about language acquisition, researcher Basil Johnson argues that although vocabulary growth is an important part of learning language, understanding is greatly important too.
  • Once upon a time.....
  • I hope you enjoyed this intro into the acquisition of language in children and how to foster language development!
