- Nya steps on a thorn.
- Nya has just got to water after eight hours of walking.
- The smudge on the horizon gained color as I drew nearer, changing from hazy gray to olive green. The dirt under my feet turned to mud , then sludge, until at last I was ankle deep in water.
- Nya's dad tells her that they are going to build a school for boys and girls.
- Nya watches as the men work to finish the well.
- "Something better" I said "a school"
- "A school?" I echoed.
- Nya meets Salva.
- "I am happy to meet you, Nya. My name is Salva."
