Erethizon Dorsaum also known as a porcupine, is a large rodent population that resides in grasslands, deserts and forests. Porcupines are nocturnal herbivores that eat plants, leaves and shrubs. Porcupines will sometimes nub on animal bone which provides them with a natural source of salt. Porcupines have very poor vision but an amazing sense of smell. Porcupines are usually eaten by bobcats, humans, coyotes and wolves. Porcupines have quills on their backs that spring out if the porcupine is in danger.
Conflict
Porcupines were attacked and eaten by different predators, one example is a wolf.porcupines that did not use their quills to defend themselves where eaten and killed. Porcupines that did use their quills to defend themselves survived.
Adaptation
Over time certain porcupines adapted and learned to use their quills to defend themselves against predators.
More Adaptation
Over time all porcupine learned to use their quills as a defense against predators. Those that didn't died.
Differential Survival
Some porcupines would have less or smaller quills than others which would prove to be a disadvantage against predators.
Conclusion
Eventually all porcupines fully evolved and learned to cope with their disadvantages and how to use their quills against deadly predators!
