Christian and hopeful go off the path to a meadow called by-path meadow, they start walking and they come up on a pit that was there to catch people who went off the path. Christian and hopeful thought this way would be easier but it was not.

look a cave, we should sleep here for the night
yes lets stay here until morning and then leave
Christian and Hopeful turn around to go back to the path and when they are going back they see a castle called doubting castle. They then find a cave that they sleep in by the castle.

you are coming with me for being on my grounds!
We just got lost off of the path, let us go we have not done anything wrong.
no please let us go we are just lost pilgrims.
giant despair found Christian and hopeful asleep on his grounds and he took them and put them in a very dark dungeon, that they stayed in for days with no food or water and where they had to suffer. The giant wanted them to suffer instead of just killing them from the start.
