Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa is a province in Pakistan, mainly located in the northern Pakistan, with a small part extending into Asia. Severe water scarcity is happening in this area, and the government is taking action with this situation.
Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, which is commonly known as KP, is currently experiencing extreme water scarcity . People in the country suffer due to the lack of clean drinking water. Only 20% of the population has access to clean water, and the remaining 80% depends on polluted, contaminated water. A large number of diseases and deaths are attributable to such water pollution.
Temperature in KP is considered as warm and temperate, with an average temperature of 22.3 °C, precipitation ranging from 406mm per year. KP receives a significant amount of rainfall throughout the year, it rains a lot even in the driest season. Precipitation of this province alters, roughly it averages about 16 inches annually. The most active duration for the precipitation occurs from January to April.
Growing water scarcity is mainly caused by the expansion of urban population, triggering people to compete for the most basic resources.
As the water scarcity continued, some areas will experience droughts, while other areas experienced flooding more frequently. Meanwhile, water scarcity is already negatively affecting the economy of the community. There is an estimated loss of 1.44% of GDP related to water scarcity and water-borne diseases in more than 80% of the country's water supply. On the other hand, in accordance with the 2017 population census, it has close to 2 million people, most of whom have few options for clean drinking water. Such a situation could cause severe infections, such as diarrhea and vomiting.
However, to address the water issues in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, the government is collaborating with the departments of agriculture, environment, welfare, and local government. The city has implemented a detailed plan for addressing water waste, said Mohammad Hassan, spokesman for the health services. “We have installed around 160 water meters at our service stations in Peshawar, with more to follow. As a result of these meters, we will be able to monitor water waste and take action to improve it. He explained.
