One of the main themes for Monsters Are Due on Maple Street by Rod Serling is fear and suspicion cause harm and destruction. It's starts off on page 82 where they see a dark figure approaching and get frightened thinking its an alien not knowing its their good friend Pete Van Horn. So Charlie gets a shotgun and decides to shoot the figure (Pete)."I didn't know who he was. I certainly didn't know who he was. He comes walkin' out of darkness. how am I supposed to know who he was.. Steve, you know why I shot! how was I supposed to know he wasn't a monster or something?" (Charlie). This shows how paranoid and scared they are about the aliens and monsters to the point where in ends in violence. Next, on page 85, they stop trusting each other and end up arguing and going back and forth about who's innocent or who's the monster because of little thing like glitches in their electricity or "strange" activities. Don-"Charlie has to be the one, get my rifle." Woman one-"its Les Goodman's hes the one. His car started, Lets wreck it." Mrs. Goodman- "What about Steve's radio, hes the one who called them." Mr Goodman- "Smash the radio. Get me a hammer. Get me something." Steve- "stop--stop." (p. 85). This shows how much harm suspicion can cause by showing how each of them are getting attacked because of weird thing they do or is happening. Lastly, Everyone had started to panic and scream, accusing each other and going into a stage of chaos and destruction, attacking each other and chasing each other down, and even vandalizing property. This shows how mad suspicion can drive the mind and how paranoid it can make you of others and your surroundings.
