  • 29th January 1840- Hobson arrive at Kororareka,Bay of Islands New Zealand.William Hobson arrives in New Zealand with an unfinished treaty draft that the chiefs were expecting to read soon.
  • 30th Jan to 3rd Feb 1840 - English Version DraftedJames Busby and William Hobson wrote an english draft treaty that was full of minor/unfair issues but had no other choice but to finish it off due to the time issue.
  • 4th Feb - English translated into Te Reo Maori by Henry Williams & his son.Henry Williams and his son, Edward Williams translated the treaty into Te Reo Maori within one night in his New Zealand home.

  • 5th Feb - Hui to consider treaty proposals occurs with about 200 Māori chiefs present.Chiefs like Hone Heke told the British to stay but chiefs like Te Ruki Kawiti told the British to leave after witnessing unfair trades/bullying.
  • 6th Feb - The first copy of the Te Tiriti OWaitangi is signed by 43 Māori and Hobson.Many chiefs had already left New Zealand after knowing that the treaty was going to be unfair. Many chiefs signed but many chiefs stayed and refused to sign.
  • 3rd Sept - About 500 chiefs had signed the Treaty.After achieving the signatures of over 43 chiefs and was successful on his first debate/treaty signing, William Hobson made two more copies of the treaty and sent it around the North Island.
