Unfortunately, Mackenzie did not find very much success on his first voyage. He did not reach the Pacific and also failed to establish new trade routes for his company. Mackenzie and his crew travelled more than 3,000 miles across the Canadian wilderness in just over three months, a huge achievement. Mackenzie's first voyage also helped tremendously to the knowledge of Northwest Canada. But it did not receive a lot of publicity and fame. Mackenzie's greatest accomplishment was that he was the first European to travel the entire Mackenzie River, which is named after him in his honour. Mackenzie left very discouraged, as he had failed to reach the Pacific and achieved little success.

Determined, Mackenzie organized a second voyage to the Pacific Ocean. He now held a better understanding of the geography in the West. In October 1792, Mackenzie moved from Fort Chipewyan to Fort Fork. Fort Fork was a new post established by the North West Company, located on the Peace River. On May 9th 1793, Mackenzie and his crew left Fort Fork and set sail once more to the Pacific.
