- Peyton Farquahr is standing on a bridge 20 feet above the water as his wrists and neck are being bound with rope. Behind are two soldiers from the Northern Army and armed sentinels. The two soldiers step back as they remove make shift bridge that Farquhar is standing on.
- Section III
- As Farquhar dangles from the edge of thee bridge, he thinks of his family to distract himself from his current situation. He hears sharp, metallic sound which turn out to be from his watch. Looking down at the water, he imagines freeing himself from the ropes and safely swimming home.
- Section III
- In section II we learn that Farquhar is a farmer who supports the South. One evening, a soldier appeared wanting a drink of water. As Farquhar's wife goes to fetch the water, he and the soldier spark up a conversation about news from the front.
- Section III
- Section III brings the readers back to current situation. Farquhar loses his consciousness but not before a loud noise wakes him up. He wakes up only to see that noose around his neck is broken and he is falling towards the water. Freeing himself from the ropes, he fights the pain from the lack of air. Farquhar looks back up to the soldiers and see that one of the sentinels fired a shot at him.
- Farquhar hears the lieutenant ordering his men to fire so Farquhar hides under the water to avoid getting shot, only coming up for air. As he attempts to swim away, he has the whole group firing after him.
- Farquhar successfully returns home after escaping from his captors. As he runs home to his wife he feels a sharp blow from his neck. Farquhar lies dead as darkness swept over his corpse.
