- In the text, Stella often thinks about who she is and the choices she's made. It says, “You couldn’t go through your whole life not knowing something so fundamental about yourself. She would feel it somehow. She would see it in the faces of other blacks, some sort of connection. But she felt nothing” (Bennett 260). This really shows her inner struggle. It shows how she feels disconnected from her racial identity and longs to belong. Even though she tries to erase her past, she realizes something important is missing, which shows her difficulty in accepting herself and the consequences of her decisions.

- In the text, Stella loves her sister Desiree a lot, and their relationship is really important to her. It says, “She’d never been without her sister and part of her wondered if she could even survive the separation” (Bennett 18). This shows her fear of losing that connection, making it clear that even though she's trying to create a new identity, she can't easily let go of her sister. It shows the emotional struggle she goes through as she deals with her choices and how being apart affects how she sees herself.

- In the text, Stella dislikes the idea of others telling her who she should be. It says, “It wasn’t a race thing. She just hated the idea of anyone telling her who she had to be” (Bennett 282). This shows how much she wants to be in control of her own life. This shows her fight against the rules and pressures to fit in, showing her determination to create her own identity, even if it means making tough choices that pull her away from her background.
